PSA: Enthusiasts who build their own PCs are used to keeping up with the latest drivers, especially when it comes to things like graphics cards. Motherboard BIOS updates are also key to getting the most out of your hardware, but it happens that when everything is running smoothly after weeks or months, you tend to overlook further BIOS updates as they mostly bring compatibility improvements and those are not needed to unless you’re upgrading to newer hardware on the same motherboard.
This happened in the office recently when one of our Ryzen systems refused to wake up properly from sleep. After a lot of troubleshooting problems, we were unable to narrow down the problem until we realized that this only started happening after installing a new GeForce RTX graphics card. Long story short, a BIOS update to the latest firmware in our Asrock motherboard was all we needed.
Also, nowadays BIOS updates can be done easily using the Windows utilities offered by most motherboard manufacturers. If you’re unsure or don’t remember the exact make and model, check out our guide to finding your motherboard make and model. There are ways to find it on Windows without installing any software, or you can go straight for CPU-Z or Speccy, which will list all of your hardware along with some extra system information in no time.
Asus real-time update
The Asus Live Update utility allows you to check for new firmware, drivers and BIOS updates. While it is generally a reliable application, it has recently been reported that Live Update’s servers have been hijacked and compromised (some) systems with malware. The latest revision is safe to use and suggests using these utilities for updating and then uninstalling and not allowing them to run when Windows starts.
The @BIOS live update utility works on the same principle as the other utilities listed here, it works with all Gigabyte branded motherboards but instead of an all-in-one utility, there are variants for each of the major chipset families from AMD and Intel. This means that you must first identify your motherboard chipset to download the correct @BIOS version.
Real-time update of the MSI
MSI’s Live Update tool allows you to update your motherboard’s BIOS, drivers and utilities. It can also check and update MSI graphics card drivers and firmware revision.
ASRock real time update
ASRock has given a twist to its live update utility by adding an “App Shop”. If you look at the bundled app store pass, there is a pretty simple interface for updating the BIOS and system drivers, worth a try if you have an ASRock motherboard.
Biostar BIOS update utility
Complementing our list of top 5 motherboard manufacturers, Biostar also offers a BIOS update utility that you can run on Windows, allowing you to check for new versions, then download and install without much hassle.
